So I did more research on interfaces with two ADAT inputs. I need this to use my S/MUX output on my Digimax FS (giving me 16@96k). I found the two that would suit me best (considering price and all): MOTU 8-Pre and PreSonus Firestudio.

My first impression of the 8-Pre was not a very good one. First, it did not come with a DSP software that allowed me to configure my I/O's of the unit. Second, the mic preamp's on it were VERY quiet. With the -20dB pad OFF I had to crank up the gain to almost max to get a level at only the -24dB VU level... After trying it at the Guitar Center studio, I looked it up online read several reviews stating the same complaints. Also, there were way too many complaints about MOTU service being absolutely horrific.

-Scratch the 8-Pre-

Now... I have not had a chance to try out the Firestudio yet, but I have heard and read many good things about it. As of now, I am using the E-MU 1820m (for those of you who do not already know); and the transition from that to a Firestudio seems so much less painful. It also has S/PDIF, MIDI, and Word Clock I/O's AND 8 changable analog outs. Plus I like the idea that I will be running one PreSonus piece into another.

The issue here is A/D conversion. APPERANTLY, my 1820m has within it the Digidesign converters from the flagship 192HD system. First of all, how true is this? Secondly, would someone compare the converters in the Firestudio to those in my E-MU?

Any questions? Please feel free to ask.

Thank you so much for your visit!

Actually, I think the conversion is currently happening in the Digimax right now anyways. Here is my thought process:

Analog signal -> Digimax -> A/D conversion to transmit to E-MU via ADAT -> E-MU recieves digital information for which no conversion is needed, thus bypassing the DigiDesign converter

Is this correct? If it is, then is it safe to say that I will not hear a difference in my sound due to a different converter, but rather due to the use of different mic pre's in the Firestudio?
