Wondering what the best mic and preamp would be good for a balloon bass.

I am thinking of throwing money at this, so Sennheiser's and Millennia might be the go.

Hmm - perhaps some of the following:

1 - a crown SASS-P placed inside the resonator balloon.

2 - an earthworks mic placed in the arse of the player, using his body cavity as the resonator - standing sessions only, Stedman poop-filter a must.

3 - Doesn't Schoeps make an attachment for that??

In any case, you're going to want to have a Focusrite Platinum series compressor/inflator handy to ensure that the balloons are squashed as much as possible without affecting their dynamic range in the slightest.

Also, bear in mind, the maximum SPL of this instrument is somewhere in the magnitude of 10 to the 23rd power dB at 6 meters (C-weighted of course!) So, high voltage mics and amplifiers are a necessity. Something on the order of the new DPA teravolt systems should suffice (with the appropriate nose cone accessory of course).
