I am looking to split the signal coming direct from electic guitar where one signal is going straight to tape/HD and the other is going to a POD then to tape/HD. Will the standard A/B - A&B box do the job? I am concerned with signal loss.

A standard AB box will allow you to go either direct to the HD or through your POD and then to the HD. If you get the Morley ABY switch, you can switch between the two or run them simultaneously.

The Jensen transformer site has a ton of technical material on splitting a signal, but it relates mostly to microphones. I would think that the power of the signal would be cut in two, but that the voltage of the signal would be about the same with a well designed box. A splitting transformer will always have some type of insertion loss, however small. If the two destinations have different input impedances, this might affect your tone a little. If you go through some type of stomp box that is set so that it dosen't change the signal much, (like a Fulltone Fulldrive 2) then splitting the signal after the box would give you a buffer in between the guitar and inputs and you might not even need a splitting transformer to get a good tone.

There are specs somewhere out there on how to build your own ABY switch box. Simple to do, actually. IF I recall, the key was finding a ....I think it was triple pole triple throw switch. I could be off on that one.
Here's one site for DIY stuff:

Here's the Morley ABY at MusiciansFriend:

Alright, I can't find that link to the switches. If you want, PM me and I'll make an effort to dig out the specs I have printed out.....somewhere in the stacks of papers... :D
