Im reviewing my options for building an HD system for both tracking and mixing purposes. My question to all of you out there with more experience with the technology, is what is the best way to go about it? I now the differences between the different HD systems, the PCI cards, the interfaces etc, but, what is the most ideal? Also I am curious as to what a good setup for a multiple channel mic preamp would be and what specifically would go well with say a 96 interface. Meaning more specifically, what type of connection between the two is good and is going to prove to be best for signal flow. I have been doing a lot of investigating, but advice from someone who knows the gear, and the way some of the gear interacts would be helpful. I just want to avoid jitter and digital errors in the whole process.

Since Alsihad is the dominant player in the digital arena, it almost makes sense to go ahead and go PT.
I talked to my digi rep and digi has a package deal of the D-Command, 24 channels of I/O, HD3 PCIe and box in a turnkey package for just under $50k. If you get the same package with the D-Control, it's $100k.
If midi's your "thang", you probably want to look at Sonar or DP. Much cheaper, but the compatability with PT session data becomes a somewhat limiting factor.

What i want to know is, if you were to go ahead and get and protools hd system with the one card, one 96i, and put it into a mac g5 with the dual processor and all of that fun stuff. What is the best multiple channel mic pre to use, and how would you suggest you connect the two to preserve the most of your signal. I have played around on an icon and a d24 and they are a waste of money, i would like one, but like i said, its a huge mouse and nothing more, hell, the only analog part of the whole damn thing is the talk back mic.

Even the API control is running in emulation mode... as are any of the other control surfaces... emulation... sheeze!
That's the problem I see with with all of the digital stuff... emulation, virtual, simulation, etc... but that's my gripe to get over, huh?
The D-Control is a $60-65k mouse!! The D-Command is about a $15k mouse. I'll take $15k over $60k any day! I haven't played with the Control 24, but I've talked to a couple of guys who've said the same thing. The only surfaces that they've even considered are the API and the D-Command. With digi offering the turnkey package with the D-Command, that's probably where I'm going to end up unless I can actually find another system that's 100% Alsihad compatable that allows me to use an analog worksurface to mix in.
As far as pre's... it's anything you like... API, Neve, Hardy, etc. For the money, you may wanna' look at Melinnea. I've been hearing good stuff from a buddy of mine who's been evaluating a bunch of gear for a university. But, at least you aren't locked in on what pre's you can use!
