I'm planning on getting a mac with dp4 and I'm not sure does the MOTU 896 firewire act as a soundcard? if not what is its purpose and what is a great sound card to get for a mac. i want to use digital and analog in/outs.
Can you give me a good chain from say a keyboard or mic to the cpu.
like mic - mic preamp - a/d conv. -etc. also please refer me to a great mic preamp.

Yes, the MOTU is a soundcard. The FireWire implementation is their way of interfacing to the computer without having to open it up. Simply plug it in, add the drivers and you're ready to go!
For Mic operation...you will need a mic pre unless the sound card has one built into it, which I do belive the 896 does have.
Synths, simply plug it in and you're off and running!
