Hi (beginner here):
I'm recording a guitar amp. I'm using a RODE NT1 thru a Peavey VMP2 pre, right to the interface (Audiophile 2496). But as I turn up the volume I get the interface input overloaded, even with the pre -20db input pad enabled.
Do I need to get into a console after the pre in order to attenuate the signal?

So yeah I think your hitting the 2496 way too hard....need to insert some attenuator pads....(-12db) one would be about right.
Short of doing that I would get a console.

You're more than likely overdriving the input to the 2496. The "output" level of the VMP is too high.
The -20db pre input pad your talking about is probably for the mic input???...and does nothing to match levels between the preamp and interface.
