I have a friend that is just getting started with a home studio. He plays pedal steel guitar and wants to be able to add tracks to other musicians songs and send them the track back to be mixed at their studio. He currently has a Mac and ipad and is computer savvy but does not want the recording equipment to be his focus. He is looking for a simple way to import the original wav or MP3 into the setup, connect his pedal steel amp via an XLR line out from his amp. He then wants to play the original track and his pedal steel accompaniment back through headphones (or monitors) and record his pedal steel track discretely from the original. He will then send the accompaniment track back to the original band for them to mix into their master.
He was looking at a dedicated set up like the Tascam DP03, but he already has a mac laptop and ipad. The technology leapfrogs so quickly in this area I am at a loss to help him. Based on his needs any suggestions on a set up? (Mac, garage band, audio interface), dedicated recording, etc.

a dedicated thing like the tascoma is just gonna be annoying when it comes to file transfers, and probably won't deliver the quality other musicians want. i'd look into something like the motu ultra lite, or apogee duet. those are small, and offer mid level pro quality. as long as the guys knows what he's doing w/ a mic in a room, they'll deliver a professional product.
+1m on the room, if using mics. if going direct, radial makes some workhorse boxes that are a step above your typical stage DI.

In the meen time, for him to sell his services online, I'd better get quality gear unless he wants to serve only amateurs...
your friend will need an audio interface with an instrument input or a good directbox and with 2 good preamps and converters.
the instrument input will help him record the signal of the guitar directly without any effect. Then if his sound is good with a pa and cab, he'll need some mics (2 for stereo)
So look for a unit with 2 mic preamps and an instrument input.. maybe a sm57 and a small condenser..
