I record into a Emu 1212m using Cubase SX.

TRACKING QUESTION: Should the input channel be set to 0db?

should I push the preamp level up untill I'm almost redlining the input channel or is that to much?

Mixing QUESTION: how hot should the signal be on the output meter?

thanks in advance,
Mark

There are those that will scream ...
observe 0dB standards ... period

When tracking I like to have a little headroom so anywhere iside 6dB of 0dBFS is fine.

when mixing the same issue applies. The mix bus and ALL sub and plu-ins require some headroom ... so no red lights anywhere.

how high should the mix bus be ... ??

this is a loaded question and is waiting for every one to jump in with their soap box at the ready.

I keep things high with a little headroom BUT appreciate the need to adjust at a later stage depending on who I am delivering the product to.

I'm pretty much in line with Kev ... I track at peaks of -6dB (digital scale). Sometimes it goes over -6dB but I absolutly do not tolerate digital overs.

When I mix, I usually aim for about -2dB on the 2-bus without any compression or limiting on the bus. Once limiting and compression are added (I only compress or limit the mix bus if the matierial is not going to mastering) I will pump it up to -1dB or even "hit" 0dB so long as nothing goes "over" 0.
