Hello...I am new to this forum and have a few questions. My band decided to use my basement as a studio...to combat spending a lot of money on studio time. I know when we recorded our first album we were able to get some good deals but still ended up paying around 10,000 for the complete project. We were pretty busy this fall and were able to purchase the following:
PowerMac G5 2.3 ghz / 2.5 gig of ram
digi002 factory bundle
PreSonus digimax preamp
krk rp-8 monitors
Bluebird Mic
2 GT44 mics
i guess that is a good start to a home studio...right now the biggest problem is getting a semi-isolated room. The basement does have the standard 8 foot ceiling. The control room is carpeted and we have yet to put up and sound treatment.
The main concern is the room we have to use for isolation. It has contrete floor and walls...I know this won't be the most condusive to recording drums but as far as vocals / acoustic guitars and other instruments what should I do to get the best sound out of the room? I would guess the room is about 8x10 - If we cant get the drums sounding good then we'll probably track them at a studio but everything else will be done in the basement.
This place seems to be the mecca of sound recording so I will take as much advice as possible. A few other questions I have...
1. whats a good economical program for the mac that I can use to create drum loops?
2. what is the most popular program used for mastering?
3. I am always interested to hear peoples recordings from home studios - does anyone have links that I can listen to?

I'm in a similar situation to you. I record in a 9x8 room with a 15x10 mixing area. I actually left my floor concrete and treated the ceilings. The sounds that come from the room aren't horrible at all. In fact the drums sound the best of all the instruments recorded in the recording room. Guitars tend to sound the worse. I'm going to pm you with my website, its not done, and please ignore all the songs by Rise from Ruin, we had a terrible runaway highhat problem and it sounds terrible. Basically the drummer had his hat way too wide open and using a condensor to mic the snare caused less than desireable hihat bleed. Listen to Runner Up and Semi Ok those are more recent recordings. Also keep in mind everything is a bit tinnier than normal due to the fact they're mp3's.
