Our friend from the south side of the earth mentioned he was "testing" the newest PT code SSS (huh?). What was never mentioned was hardware. The cards, interfaces, and such.

When I put my ear to the ground the rumble I heard was "new hardware" and "incompatibilties" between old and new.

That'd suck, huh?

if you want to stay at 44.1?

Although 96kHz has been bandied about all over the place, I doubt to start with it will be used much except for those people who are actually creating a 96kHz master for SACD or DVD-A. For those creating CDs I imagine that you will track and mix at 88.2kHz as the convertion to 44.1 should be much quicker and less damaging to audio fidelity. Provided everything works as expected you should see an improvement in audio quality by taking this route rather than tracking, mixing and mastering all at 44.1kHz.

Can I hang my Apogee's off the new cards (I bet not..)

I should imagine you will still be able to use your Apogee's although you will be limited to 44.1 or 48kHz, unless Apogee bring out some sort of mod.

I read your post about higher sample rates on the DUC and was surprised at your findings.
From what I've read I always assumed that higher rates meant something audibly better but recently people- who's views I must respect because of their product quality- have said to me that 96k really is not audible, unless the listener is a small rodent.

Again it's make you're own mind up time, which is half bewildering, half fun.

What would make you upgrade to a new PT system?

Well, I'd have to disagree with that one, I found the difference to be quite obvious. Of course though there's the usual caveat; it depends what you are listening to, how good your ears are and the quality of the monitoring environment. For instance I don't think that an average member of the public would notice much of a difference on thier average home system, but there again much of what I do is never going to be consciously heard by the public anyway.

What would make you upgrade to a new PT system?

It would have to sound better and provide new features that would improve my work flow. It would need to have rock solid stability and be within my budget. I certainly won't be the first in the cue for the new system. I'll leave it for at least a couple of months after the launch to see what the feedback is like.

For me, the problem with 96 and higher is all the new high speed stuff that goes along with it.

Do we go ultra320? Or should we skip scsi altogether and go all the way to fibre? Is LTO the best choice for massive backups? How do we get hotswap drive interchangeability when everything is on RAID? Do any of the 500 DVD formats burn fast enuf to be a serious consideration?

It's nice that technology is progressing in leaps and bounds, but unfortunately that momentum is fueled by our wallets. Make the right choice and you're good for the next (hopefully) couple years. Make the wrong choice and you'll have to re-purchase anything that didn't become a standard. Not that we have time to determine what a standard is before the next order of magnitude is unveiled. Welcome to the future, guys. This will truly be the "Bleading Edge".

I wouldn't be surprised to see the new PT with a lot more support for firewire drives. Theoretically very high transfer rates and it doesn't clog up the PCI bus. A serious consideration if we are going to maintain track count at 96kHz.

Unfortunately, my work has all been for TV/Film and so it's all covered by exclusive licenses and I can't distribute it. As you live in the UK there is a reasonable chance that you have seen one of Lynda La Plante's "Trail & Retribution" series, if so then you have already heard my work.

I kinda liked the way the original PT system circumvented the computer and chained the HD directly to the digi hardware. It would be nice to remove the audio files from the computer again and let the hardware deal with it in a proprietary and therefore predictable, standardized way. Oops, getting a little too close to "ideal", innit?

Nope unfortuneately I haven't seen any of those!! If you can recommend a film then I may have more chance of getting hold of it, or you could give me a nod when you've got something coming up on TV....??

I finished the music to "Trail & Retribution V" last year so it will be broadcast throughout the ITV network sometime this year. A film I made that I believe is still available in the UK is called "The Trench", it's sometimes still aired on the Sky movie channels.
