Howdy
I have about three or four dead computer monitors in my garage. They're really just taking up space so I want to get rid of them. Has anyone had any experience with recycling or donating older computer peripherals? I've searched online for recycling places but, and I find this odd, there don't seem to be any centers here in the Orange County/LA area of California.
I would prefer donating as some of these places are charging upwards of $35 to recycle a monitor. As I said, I have three or four sitting in the garage and that can add up right quick.

I find this to be puzzling also. I know there is at least 1 program to recycle computers in the SF Bay Area, and I would be surprised if there wasn't one in LA..... ??? The problem with poisonous contaminates isn't restricted to the CRT's but on the boards also.. mercury in the back up batteries and other contaminants in the chips and other electronic components. I would do a further search "analog" style, .... in the phone book under recycling. :D There has got to be a way to dispose of these safely... You might ask someone at the Salvation Army or some other organization that takes donations of used household items who they deal with to dispose of such items.. Call the county toxic waste program... A couple of thoughts... Fats

Hey guys
I've heard that Goodwill (and other charity organizations) will take stuff, working or no. I mean, even if I give it and someone lops off the end of the VGA connector, its something they didn't have to buy.
Anyhow, my next stop within the next coupla days will be Goodwill. Sheesh, I just took them 8 grabage bags full of clothes, why wouldn't they take 4 monitors...? Heh.

Put the plastic case in the plastic bin. Take the circuit boards and toss them in the trash.
Once you get down to 3 tubes, here lies the problem of implosion. Getting rid of those is the challenge. I would *NOT* break them and put them in a glass recycle center, too much poison phosphorus in the shadow mask. I would ask Circuit city or Best buy to discard them for you..certainly they have such a program.
