Currently I have a Audio Teh 4033 condenser mic,A Bellari stereo tube preamp going into Digi 001 /Pro Tools le ;mac g4 .theres also aRNC and Lexicon reverb not yet hooked up.I considered the high end choices in mic and pres but thats not financialy on for now.The aI'm of this recording effort is to write and record songs [demos] to play to Publishers .Ill be playing everything myself.Digital piano, sampled soundsvia Mach5 but what to do about the all important vocals?Better mic thats fasirly easy to decide.but the Pre stumps me.Lets hear it from the audience.!

Keep in mind that it is wise to plan on choosing a preamp to match your current mics and those that you think or know your going to buy. I would think that for basic demo work that what you already have should do the job. Insert that RNC and learn how to use that and you'll find it can make a big difference. If your gonna spend money, I would suggest that you buy the highest quality mic you can afford and use the gear that you have for awhile.

I haven't used it on vocals yet, but I recorded my acoustic guitar with two "budget" small diaphragm condensers along with a bit of compression to Hard disk and the sound coming back through the monitors made me laugh in disbelief. I was expecting it to sound very "Valvey" i.e. coloured sound, some tube saturation etc... but it sounded so clean and clear, no muddiness whatsoever and a really sweet smooth top end. Not "spikey" at all.

If you are limited by budget, but still want pristine quality then I would suggest you audition a Gold Mike made by SPL. I recently bought one of these and I am blown away by the true, classy quality of this valve mic pre!
It's amazing value for money (I paid £499 GBP, about $845US) for two channels....
Other people on this forum may disagree, but to my ears it sounds as good as a mic pre of at least twice the price.
