I just finished recording Enforsaken (Century Media Records) for the Dimebag tribute CD I'm organizing. Overall the kick, guitars, and bass sound good. The snare sounds like youre hitting a piece of wood with a hammer and the toms sound tooo natural.

I've been farting around with EQ on the toms and snare, but not having luck. I had to gate the toms because there was so much snare in them that I couldn't even use the mic'd snare track. I'm having a hard time getting the toms and snare to sound less natural...I know that is a wierd dilemma, but it throws off the song when the kick sounds like a trebly basketball on a gym floor and the rest of the drums sound like a Dave Matthews tune.

I've tried Drumagog, but can't find a decent sampled tom or snare. Any free drum samples out there that sound Pantera esque?
Help needed big time!

Hey Art, I offered to help before and I still would like to if you are interested. When you say the toms sound too natural do you mean they sound to ringy? Not enough boom? If the snare sounds like a block of wood most likely you have too much top end in there - too much "crack". Try adding some low mid to the snare and cutting back some high end. Try removing some midrange on the toms and boosting both the high end frequencies where the "attack" sound is and boost a bit of the fundamental bottom of the toms (low mids) to give them a nice full sound.

heres what you do

this is what i have done before and it worked... but only if used tastefully.

if your going to try triggering your drums (are you useing a DAW?)... it should be cake. You just need a good sample to sub for it.

what you do is listen to some records with a kick, snare, even tom sound you like... Listen for a time when its JUST the drums and if you CAN get clean sound of JUST one of the drum aspects. there you go. listen for a drum solo, breakdown, intro... whatever. It shouldnt be too hard to find with some soulfly, Messuggah, Fear factory records... even pantera. then you have the ULTIMATe tribute...

but sample that 'aspect' if you can get a clean one by itselft... and throw that into your DAW and trigger it with your trigger plug in or whatever your useing. it works great in a clutch.
