Hello everybody, i'm a bit new here, so please excuse my innate stupidity. i wonder if soimeone can help me on this:

for years, i've been using a Roland VS840EX, recording me tunes onto zip disk. i recently got Cubase SX and started using it to mix the previous recordings, but the only way i've been able to import stuff off of my 8-track onto the pc is to play it in real time into a wave editor and save the tracks that way. however, when these tracks are subsequentlyimported into cubase, they don't all line up exactly, which gives me a huge headache aligning everything, a sometimes futile task if the pc recording glitched in any way.

what i want to know is this.. is there anyway of getting my pc and my roland to talk to each other and simply upload the files from the roland onto pc directly, rather than this real time stuff i have to do? it would make life so much easier.

Perhaps by syncing your DAW and the Roland via MIDI (make the Roland chase the DAW) you could transfer tracks 2 at a time via the S/PDIF port ...

I don't think this would be sample accurate but it may be closer than what you are doing.

Another solution is to go to the end of each song that you want to transfer from the Roland and arm all the tracks, route a drum machine to all inputs ... and record a snare or side stick hit. You can then use this as a marker to align all your tracks on the DAW in the edit window ..

(I'm brand new to this 'board, so please forgive the lateness of this reply:)

I have a Boss BR-8, a digital 8-track which--like yours--records onto Zip disks. If I understand correctly, Boss and Roland are somewhat sister companies, and while I'm only assuming this will work for your VS840, it might be worth a try:

Once there, scroll down until you see "BR-8 WAV Converter Software for PC;" download this and put it someplace handy (i.e. your desktop). Now, assuming you have a Zip drive for your computer, just plug in the recorded-on Zip disk from your Roland and convert the files into .wavs via the converter. Everything will sync up just as you recorded it.
