how do i know what sound card is best for my pc recording, i am using a dell latitude 600, adobe audition 1.5, an AT2020 microphone going into a Xenyx802 then into the laptop. Someone had recommended the Lexicon Alpha.
Am i losing microphone quality by not having a soundcard? any help would be appreciated,

How are you connecting the Xenyx802 to your laptop? If you simply going into the built-in mic input, using the laptop's soundcard, then that's probably crippling your signal. Someone suggested a Lexicon Alpha, which is a USB interface (which would bi-pass your soundcard's lousy input). That would be much better, but if you're recording into a laptop, try to avoid a USB interface. Firewire is faster, and more flexible. Take a look at the Alesis io14. This is one of the cheapest firewire interfaces (most sub-$300 interfaces are USB), and usually gets great reviews on the forums.
