Just wondering if there is any reason to record in stereo if I'm then combining track with other mics and mixing down to mono.
I'm recording acoustic jazz bass with 2-3 mics and then mixing into a mono channel to use pan and use in a mix. Is there any difference in fullness of sound to mix stereo into mono vs just combining a few mono mic tracks?

Ah, yes! Thanks. Speaking of phase issues, what should I be aware of when setting up the single mics on an instrument. I was planning on trying out a ribbon and a LD condenser on a cello/violin to mix later if I like.
I was also planning on micing the cello/violin in a stereo set up (just what I'm used to being a classical cellist and all), but since I'm tracking all of the instruments separately, it sounds like rather than being a good idea, stereo micing might actually cause my some trouble?

No, in fact you run the risk that your mix might sound fine to you in stereo but have some unpleasant phase cancellations in mono. This is especially true since you have several mics on a single source. The different distances are sure to cause some phase/time differences in the signals. These differences can be a good thing in a stereo mix and have a bad effect in mono.
