I have an M-Audio FireWire interface which is very mobile and an FMR RNC Mic Preamp. I use them to record classical acoustic concerts and recitals and I like both of them.
However, I am looking at the TC Electronic Impact Twin. It "MAY" have a little more clean gain for use with Ribbons and the A/D conversion should be a little better than the M-Audio. The TC unit can be had for $400. The M-Audio and FMR together cost $900.
I won't sell the RNC no matter what and it's not exactly apples to apples as the M-Audio handles more inputs and the TC has processing.
I just want to get as clean as possible audio into my laptop with minimal set up.
I usually record only 2 track stereo but want to keep the option of at least 4 simultaneous tracks.
I'd appreciate your opinions.

More importantly, the Impact Twin will not hold back any outboard preamp you purchase no matter what it is. The same cannot be said of the M-Audio. If you want more of an all in one solution the look at the Konnekt 48. Would be just as inexpensive as the Impact Twin + entry level decent preamp.
My M-Audio is an 1814. It has 2 Mic Pres, 8 Line In, an ADAT. The main thing for me is portability/durability and clean signal path. The Konnekt 48 looks great but less portable.
If the Pres and A/D conversion are better in the Impact Twin, I can use my RNP for the other 2 pres when necessary.

You are correct, I typed RNC, shoulda been RNP. I have RNCs but ever since 24bit came along, I don't use them. I really like the Waves RComp. And all the "R" Waves.
