Hi everyone.
I have a little studio at home working under Windows XP. the pc features are: PIII 1Ghz, 512ram, audio device Echo Layla20, Cubase SX. The system is working fine so far, except with new VSTi generation (like the Grand or Minimoog etc.) so I was going to increase ram to 1024Mb for 200€. The pc dealer is telling me that my pc is going out of standard as the new ones are serial ATA. But changing the pc and selling the old one would cost about 900Eur.

I would be happy to spend only 200E and keep my pc, but my doubt is what counts more? a large ram or a PIV cpu? in other words, if I invest 900 E for a new pc, are performances increasing so dramatically?
Thansk for your advise
Fab

Yes Fab, there is a big performance difference if you go from a P3 1Ghz to a P4 2Ghz or better. That being said it sounds like you are happy with your PC except with a couple of apps. Moving from 512MB to 1GB should help as The Grand uses 90 on it's own. Along with the OS and Cubase SX it sounds like you've exhausted the available RAM. The RAM upgrade should hold you for a while so I see no immediate need for a new PC. If your happy with it, add the RAM, enjoy recording and tell the sales guy to pound sand.

You may want to budget for a new PC in the future as eventually software coming down the road won't run on a P3. By that time you should have saved enough for a new PC or better yet build your own (you'll get much better performance from a home built for less money). You could then use your old PC for Internet and Email or whatever you like. And if you need advice on components or how to build your own, you came to the right place as many of us on the DAW forum have been building them for years.

Hope this helps and good luck :D
