I'm helping a piano/violin teacher set up a recording system. Her technical skills are somewhat limited, so I wanted to get some input about what DAW I should set her up with. She needs basic audio features, and I would like to set her up with some nicer MIDI features. Most of her recording will be MIDI. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Mixcraft has some AWESOME midi capability. Especially the pro studio version. It's got some synth VSTi's that are just as good as what Owl City uses... if not better :) I think either mixcraft or reaper would be good... reaper's a little more complicated in terms of layout, but being a violinist and knowing violinists, her curiosity will probably be aroused and she'll want to explore some mixing technique whatever program she gets.

Fruity Loops is very powerful and pretty much built for MIDI. It's very easy to get started, but it has a lot of power for when you start learning more about it as well.
If you mean recording audio, it's a bit trickier to learn / figure out at first... but I do it all the time. If she wanted she could even record say a violin in audacity or something (free program) and then import that into fruity loops as well.
