I've got a DAW that has onboard pre's. No channel inserts, so there is really no way to get by going through the pre's.

Has anyone had good results using an outboard pre this way? Would it be a waste to buy a Sebatron and still have to go through this DAW's pre section? I know I've read a few things that this isn't the optimal way to do it, but I'm stuck with this workstation for now. Probably just be using the Sebatron for vocals and/or drum room/overs, and using the onboard pre's for everything else. It's mainly rock stuff, and the singer has got some good lungs. Would I be better off getting a good tube mic? Just looking to warm things up, not too concerned with sounding clean.

I have heard people run pre amps through preamps, in a situation like yours only with a KORG D1600 .. and it sounded different .. but it would be a stretch to say it sounded better.

It's not the way you are supposed to do it ...

I think it's possible that good pres would be wasted on the 2488 ... between having to run everything through the pres and the cheapo converters, its almost a lost cause. I think a Sebatron vmp 2000 e is more expensive then the 2488! :shock:

The whole idea of a stand alone all in one DAW like the 2488 is not to have to get anything else. But these are not the type of systems that can be built upon and expanded. They are all in one complete packages.

If you want something that you can expand, get a computer, some software, a PCI card / interface combo or a Firewire interface and some good pres and go for it!
