I love the sound of the vocals on old standard records,
such as those recorded by Frank Sinatra, Ella fitzgerald,
etc. I am looking to invest a modest $$$ amount($1500-$2500) in a new microphone and preamp / compressor, that would help me to get that full bodied, warm, yet clear sound that can be right up front in a mix..
I currently own an AT4033 (and dbx 160A) purchased about 10yrs ago, but not confident this is the right microphone. Looks like I only have the budget for one good mic and preamp/compressor so the combo would need to be something I could use on almost any voice. Currently I am working with a female vocalist that can sound a little thin and too bright at times. I was thinking about the AEA R84 ribbon mic and the LA610. Has anyone used this gear?
I would greatly appreciate opinions and insight on capturing this classic vocal sound on a modest budget.

I have seen pictures of both Frank and Ella in front of both RCA ribbons, both 44's and 77's, and old vintage Neumann condensers like the U47 or ELAMs ... but most likly in that time period, the pres were either UA 610's or RCA tube pres , as those were most prevelant at the time.
Many of those Sinatra recordings were done by Bill Putnam ...
