Computer speakers. $250 won't even buy you a single monitor that is worth listening to.

I like my Event TR8's. I got the pair used for $250. Like most budget monitors (from what I have heard) the bass response is not great. below 60Hz is not usable. Everything above 60Hz is crystal clear.

I use and prefer only 2 brands. JBL Pro and KRK's. Both passive and self powered.

Other brands of speakers are just OK for additional references. But you gotta' have a well known jummpin' off point. Esspecially if you ever do any work in any one else's studios. That's why some of us stick with our oldtimer references. When you've recorded hits on em'? Why change?

I use KRK rp5, they're cheap and acceptable, but no bass

i use yorkville ysm2's, powered, and i think they are decent. when i compared them to KRK, they seemed much more clear in the mids. if fact, with the KRK's (the lower end ones anyway) the mids ie: guitar and vocals!!!! seemed to disappear... or were overpowered by hyped bottom/top.
that said, i just posted on a thread about hearing loss, so take that for what it's worth!

Best investment I've made for my home studio is JBL LSR 4328.

On a budget myself I purchased a pair of BX5 moniters and they were well worth the 200 bucks I spent. I'm in no way a pro! I just wanted something that was better than the surround speakers I was mixing and these get the job done.
