Tube Royer Ribbon Mic!

Yup. I saw it at NAMM. Uses a super duper tube that is out of print (Royer buys 'em for about $70 each). Mega specs, and I have forgotten all of them. It looked pretty cool, I mean warm, and damn, I forgot the model number too.

It's amazing how much you can see in 6 hours if you really try. And I had to schmooze some artists/endorsees too.

Recording thru ADAT to 2408 via lightpipe

Lately, because I think the ADAT XT-20 converters sound better than MOTU 2408's, I'll record-enable my ADAT XT 20 and feed this straight out through the lightpipe to the 2408 where it is recorded to Digital Performer. So only one analog to digital conversion is happening, though ADAT is passing off to MOTU via a very cheap cable. Am I crazy?

Do you really need a distressor?

OK if you get a 1176 (say a Purple Audio) and an LA2a type comp. (say a Manley El Op), and you have the RNC and an Avalon 737, do you really need something that is trying to emulate the things you have? I know it's another part of your pallet yada yada yada. Seems the only thing I'd need it for is the harmonic distortion stuff but is this really better than real tubes and transformers?

60 million records with a Shure SM7($300) mic!

Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" was recorded by Bruce Sweiden through a Massenburg console and a Shure SM7 mic. Bruce said he wanted the sound of a dynamic mic specifically, and not a large condensor(Mix Mag 1997). This was a number one song, and was the Hottest! thing when I was in 3rd grade. To all my fellow gear junkies...when in doubt use your ears and experiment, not your wallet.
