Newbie (yet not newbie): hardware/software compatibility

:? Hello to all. My name is Rob, I'm new to this board, and have a question concerning hardware/ software compatibility. From the posts on this board, I sense a high level of expertise...and hardware /software knowledge. I am a long time recording artist/guitarist/bassist/vocalist/mixer/producer who has never really stepped up to true multi track recording.

Playback Dropouts

Hi, Im just getting used to my new toys for Christmas! I've been playing back some music (not my own recorded material) on my computer. The audio goes through a firewire bus PC card, to a Firewire Mixer/Interface. I have monitors hooked up to the control room out of the firewire device, and usually get perfect playback, although I get too many random complete sound dropouts.

Using hardware effects with logic

I have finally bitten the bullet and ordered a Mac Pro with Logic and a Alesis Firewire mixer/interface (multimix 16).

I am new to DAW recording having previously been using all in one multirack recorders for the past few years. Over this time I have gathered some rack gear (effcts and reverbs) that I would still like to use if at all possible.

MAC PRO or IMAC 24" with Pro Tools LE and digi002

ok the entry level mac pro is $1999 at macmall.com and the imac 24" is about the same price. Which should i go with? The advantage of the imac is that the screen is already there. The advantage of the mac pro is that it is completely upgradeble. Are there upgrades for the iMac?

I just need honest opinions of what you would do in this situation.

thanks

Edits to a concert recording

I've got something coming up where we will record a concert (string quartet) and then they want to do a session in the same venue immediately afterward to get alternate takes for any problem areas. Recording location is a church, but not one I have been in before so no knowledge of the details yet. (The recording is in early February, so I have time to check it out.)
