Hi. I'm looking to spend no more than $1500 on a 1 or 2 channel mic preamp. It will be used to record rock music, and will be used on everything. The units I've been considering that fall within this range are:

UA M610
UA 2108
Great River ME-1NV
API 512c
Focusrite ISA428

I'm new to the whole music recording industry, but coming from a digital video background I have worked with sound a little.

sorry for doing this to you guys. i know there are tons of posts on pre's but i need something specific for me before i go to the u.s. tomorrow and buy something that will leave me unsatisfied and with no money. any help is greatly appreciated.

My setup:
Neumann U87 and Neumann M147;
MOTU 896HD;
Commercials for radio and tv.
I read several topics in this forum about pre but I haven't decided yet.
What is the best mic preamp for my service ?

I've seen a website. don't have the url right now...but they sell kits to build your own mic preamps based on Neve and other high-end mic preamps.

Has anyone ever built one? Is it worth the money? I'd like to build one just for fun, but if it is a quality product then I think that is just grand!

I'm looking for a good mic preamp-amp and compressor in one unit. I've looked at the whole Focusrite Platinum range but they don't have enough controls on the compressors for me. They only give you like 2 or 3 from threshold, ratio, attack, release and makeup gain.

How would the Neve 1073 mic preamp clash wit the u87?
then into a Manley El-Op comp? For R&b/rap vocals, will we get a pro sound? We currently use 737s with our u87s, will we notice a big difference by replacing the mic preamps?

Trying to decide on the 7600 strip or the lunchbox. All feedback appreciated.

Currently my mic preamp set up consists of the following:

1 PreSonus MP20
1 True Systems PS2/analog
1 16 ch. Mackie VLZ pro
Also the pres on my Tascam DM-24 and Tascam FW 1884
