Hardware buffer increase and decrease in pro tools?

I'm using a new macbook pro running windows vista. Pro Tools 7.4. I'm using a Maxtor 500GB external hard drive to write to. Regardless of what I'm doing, whether it be playback or recording, I get errors either saying to increase or decrease buffer size. I believe they are -6085 and -6088. I've been googling like a mad man, and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is.

Logic audio buffer help requested.

Ok so i was sitting in on a logic recording session and i remember the engineer saying

" You will have to change the
buffer settings in logic audio preferrences in order to record "
as i was taking in a thousand other studio quirks and rooting paths etc i was only half on the ball... i know terrible hey.

My question is firstly

I don't understand buffer size with Cubase LE

What exactly is the buffer size? For instance, I have the M-Audio Firewire 410 and in the software interface I can change the buffer size down to 64, and this gives me a low latency in Guitar Rig 2. However, when I raise it I get a higher latency. I figured a buffer meant how much memory is allocated to a specific task, and if there is more memory, shouldn't I have less latency?

Can't change the Buffer Size - M-Audio FireWire 410 card

Hello!

I'd like to understand why I can't change the Buffer Size - which is on
256 - in my card interface. There is some arrows to change it but
nothing happens when I touch them.

Not possible in Cubase too... to field for doing this is gray, can't
touch it.

I have a Celeron 2.4 GHz et 512 Mb of memory (Windows). I use Cubase sx 2.0.
