Effects vs Processors

I just read a *great* article in the February 2002 issue of Sound On Sound magazine regarding pluginsthat raised lots of questions in my mind about how I am currently using them. (I love articles that generate more questions than they answer!)

Sound on Sound is a great magazine (U.K. based). Check them out at:

Temperature effect on mic frequency response?

Forums

Is it possible that mic frequency response can vary with the temperature of the microphone? I recently used two Shure KSM-32 mics, that had been inadvertently stored at around 50 degrees F, to record a grand piano. These mics are generally pretty useful for the piano but the results in this case seemed better than usual.

Guitar FX pedals... Survey

OK let em rip!

I felt it was time to buy a Tube Screamer pedal as it is supposed to be the cats pyjamas for rock gtr.. Anyhow the cool guy in the store said, FORGET THAT! Get a "Hot Cake" pedal (made in New Zealand) he said it is much better.. Link removed

I know some rock god producers have GIANT boxes full of pedals...

So far I ain't got ONE!

Payrate for sound effects?

Hello,

I am actually bidding for a job to design some sound effects for a project. It mainly doing stuff like footsteps, walking sounds, etc. I am going to record all new things for this project. I am not the most experienced in this aspect but it seemed a fun thing to do.

My question is what is an average pay rate for a job like this? Any help will be appreciative.

Automating Effects via MIDI

I have heard that you can automate MIDI-compatible effects units using a sequencer. MIDI is very confusing to me, but I'm sure it will cut down on the number of hands I need for mixdown! There are a number of projects I'm working on that need effects punched in and out. What are the best (affordable) sequencers for this purpose, and does anybody have any tips on using them?
