Is EQ something that should only be adjusted after recording vocals? I've read that compression can be applied before recording, but only if you know what you are doing since it can't be taken out. Is it the same deal with EQ?

I just recently got a new Behringer UBB1002 as my first mixer and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me out with the EQ settings and gain. Im new to home recording so I dont really know the standards for proper levels of gain, dB, etc.. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having trouble with some live music in the way that we have just okay mics, and the songs we play sound pretty good, but sometimes when the vocal melody has a really low part, it gets lost in the music and you can't understand the words, which is understandable because the bass frequencies mix and mingle with the other stuff and don't get heard as much.

I've been experimenting for several years now, and without making this a thread of "boost this and cut that", "use this not that". I was wondering if there is a useful reference (book, CD, etc) for drum eq/compression/gate/etc available (in addition to my ears and creative experimentation).

I'm doing some essays in EQ with a recording I made the past year: violin and bass drum (the drum doing a percussive accompaniment) playing dance music. It is folk music.
I have done yesterday some search in this Forum about EQ and I found the following:

I don't wanna fight with the CubaseSX MIDI device editor to configure a Radium61 controller, so can anyone link to me some preset in xml format? they do exist for brand controller as Roland or Yamaha, but I've not found any for M-Audio Radium61.

i'm using a Yamaha EMX66M 600 watt powered mixer w/12 in Peaveys...4pc live (i'm not recording) rock band w/vocals only going through the mixer/pa. any rule of thumb as to eq settings on the graphic equalizer? (i.e. add some freq "X"/or cut on freq "y"). and what are the sweet frequencies to boost for fullness and the "in frontness" that vocals need?

I just picked up a pretty high end pre/di and eq unit (Speck electronics) and compressor (FRM RNC), and i'm having trouble getting what i feel to be natural sounding results with them (it's a little better than without them, but not a ton).

What's the rule of thumb when it comes to getting a "good" setting on your EQ for bass guitar and drums? :w:
