Recording levels
Hi! :)
I'm new hear at RO (hey to everyone from sweden) and have some questions about recording levels. 24 bit recording gives me a big dynamic range to record my analog stuff.

audio levels vary
I hope somebody can help!I am using cooledit pro.I have a tubeamp with a condenser mic. When I record dialog for a voice over, the levels go up and down. They go up for a few seconds, almost peaking, then down much lower. All of the components connected seem to be working ok.Is it the software, maybe the sound card?

Question: A Whole New Level?
Here's one for the Rock & Rollers,
I've recently been coming across a few commercial records that seem to have brought a whole new level of play to the volume war game.

Lexicon Effects Processor I/O Level Set...Woooo!
OK...
This makes no sense to me.
I'm bustin' the ceiling with my Effects Processor's minimal settings
I'm running the Lexicon MPX-500 w/ an Echo Audio LAYLA 24/96 PC AI. I'm looping my dry, pre-recorded signal out of the Layla's 3/4 Outs...in & out of the Lexicon; & back into the Laya's 3/4 Ins (all balanced.)
Setting Levels
I thought I had a reasonabel grasp on setting levels until recently. I purchased an MX2424 with the analog i/o card for recoridng in a cafe. The unit is set for -20 dbfs, which comes to +4 dbu for a console that has a max output gain of 24 dbu. There is where the trouble begins.

+4db levels louder than -10db levels
I have a Digi 002 with -10db rca and +4db 1/4" outputs. My CD recorder has rca -10db inputs. I once used the +4db output to the CD recorder, and the sound was loud and distorted. So my question is this...if I had a CD recorder with balanced XLR +4db inputs, would a CD made with this recorder be LOUDER than a disc recorded with my -10db CD recorder?
Thanks

Focusrite ISA 220 level settings
Hey all --
When making sure I'm getting good levels into my Focusrite ISA 220,
I'm wondering if i should go by the VU Meter or the Digital Input Meter?
I find that If i make sure the input on the VU is getting nice levels
then i can get some nice low compression...
