Monitoring levels...
I've been changing my monitoring levels lately and I'm really liking the results. I'm just wondering what others are monitoring at. My trend in the last year has been lowering my level. I don't have a set level per say, it mostly depends on the type of music but in general it's hovering around 70-80 db.

pre mastering levels
What sort of levels (peak and avg) do you mastering guys wanna see on mixes you receive? Where do you try and end up? At the end of the day, what's the standard VU measurement and are all the peaks at 0dbfs now?
Thanks in advance

Panning & Levels?
I have a level issue...I'm monitoring through a Mackie 1604 --2 channel stereo panned hard right n left. I seem to be getting more level out of the left side due 2 the meter running hotter...I've check all gain structure from my Mac running DP to my individual trim on the MAckie & master faders...all equal. If I even out the panning to straight up, all levels are even?

Can someone explain to me the concept of "line level?" I don't even know how to ask the question more specifically because I don't know exactly what kind of answer I'm looking for.. sorry..

Input/Output levels for preamps
Excuse my ignorance, but I own 2 mic preamp-amps, an ART Tube MP and a Studio Projects VTB-1 and on both units there are levels for input and output.
usually when recording I set both input and output
at 12:00 o'clock. Is this a good idea, or are there some hard, fast rules for these settings?
Thanks for any and all input,
GC

Commercial Volume level
Could someone give me an idea of what chain you would use to obtain commercial volume levels specifically rap & r&b.(It a db war). The technique i use now is to lower the bottom end with multiband compression(c4)to reduce overload, compress everthing else about 6-9 db then eq the bottom in back in. I know there is no fix all method but there has to be a something thats commonly done.

Thanks for higher level
I would like to thank this forum and all the people who have provided insight. Since I discovered this forum, the level of my recordings has improved exponentially. I'm amaised at how a good pre-amp (Sebatron VMP-2000E) and a good microphone (Sanken CU-44X) can provide such an amazingly better sounding, more dimensionial sounding recording.

Hill Audio Mixing board. What level is it on? Pres? EQ?
Hey Guys, I have an opportunity to get a Hills Audio Mixing Console. Its a monitor mixer (24x6) from 1984. Also, I know its Brittish. I'm using an Allen and Heath Mix wizard (which I like a lot) and was wondering if I would be upgrading in sound quality by getting this piece.
Rms level...measuring and definition
Ok so it's back to recording 101 here. I had read a previous thread on setting the rms to levels of -12 to -14 and concerning less with 0db.
