My first high-end gear for mastering.. which would you r
Hi friends..
I think it is already time to leave junior school, project days where I do everything with pluins, digital console and PT.
I do not want to sell one kidney, but which would you recommend me as a "pro" entry gear for more serious mastering?
I just do not want to be seen as "one more guy playing mastering stuff with plugins.."
Surround sound mastering
I finally mastered my first surround sound release for DVD-A. This was tons of fun. It really took a lot out of me mentally but i'm sure it will get easier the more I do it. This is kind of in response to Don's "will SACD restore dynamics" thread. If you have the monitors calibrated correctly and you monitor at a decent level, it's really uncomfortable to push it to the max.

Mastering =Extrapolation.
I wanted to share this simply because this is what we do. We extrapolate information to another realum.
Basically, mastering is taking the pro format and turning it into the consumer format. It gets much deeper than that too!
Say, you get a 2-bus that has different 2-bus dynamics from left to right channel.

Why are mixing and mastering considered separate steps?
Something has perplexed me for a while:
Why are mixing and mastering considered separate steps? It seems to me that a better job could be done if the separate levels and frequencies of the original source material could be adjusted during the final process to compensate for changes and correct for mistakes, as mix dynamics are being adjusted.
Mastering for radio vs. . for audiophiles
I do transfers from vinyl to CD. The ones that I've done for regular people, they just love. However, when I've done it for someone who tells me they are an audiophile, I either don't get a second call or they tell me the sound that they get with their ultraexpensive turntables (think LINN) sounds more alive and real.
