Help me mix this song!

Hello!

I am a novice 002R user and would be very pleased about any help about the fine art of mixing a song in Pro Tools 8.

I recently recorded couple of songs from a band rehearsal. Here is one of them. Please give me good advices what to do to the song in whole and to the individual instruments. I can then go on and try to do what you advice.

Should I mix with my crappy headphones, or crappy speakers?

Well, I don't think my speakers are "crappy" really, but I don't think they're meant for audio recording either.

Headphones: Cheap wraparound the head ones that were popular about 6 years ago.

Speakers: Logitech z4, cost me about $70. Sound great for movies!

Poll: Do you mix with a mouse or control surface

I made a guess in another thread that most people with "low cost" studios mixed with a mouse and automation rather than using some sort of control surface. Thought I would run a poll and see the reaction. Picked $50,000 for the "low cost" cutoff. Figured that would cover a lot of us.

Me, I'm 100% with a mouse.

Master fader out levels for mix down.

In Cubase, if I wanting to do an audio mix down (in order to master in Wavelab using processing), what is a safe level for the master outs? Should I keep it in the green-yellow (or can it creep into the read every so often? Should I not let it past 0db (as I can always increase it during mastering)?

How DID they mix that?...

Sublime's self-titled album.

On the two tracks "What I Got" and "Wrong Way", the drum set is really clear and upfront. How did they achieve that?

On some of the deeper grooves like "Garden Grove" and "April 29th" the bass is full, big, smooth, deep, clear, and balanced? How would I hope to try and copy that?

Mastering a digital mix to analog tape and back.

I read somewhere that sometimes a digital mix will be put onto analog tape and then converted back to digital in an effort to induce the warmth of analog tape.

Is this a common procedure, and how effective is it at doing just that, namely adding some warmth or body, or replicating an analog sound?
