Mid-side processing takes a left/right stereo signal and breaks it up into two separate layers: Mid and Side. Mid-side processing is a highly effective way of making adjustments to the spacialization of a mix or master to make your mix sound full and wide.

what is mid-side recording and how do I configure it?

I have read a few postings suggesting that a mid-side recording combo is a good alternative to x-y or spaced pairs. I have a few pencil condenser mics as well as a RODE K2.

Should I wish to use mid-side technique (I assume with a single mic facing the subject and the K2 on figure-8 facing across as the side) how do I configure my recorder? Is is a stereo recording or two monos?

amateur needs pro answer about M/S and spot mic

I am an amateur trying to record some own solo compositions on my acoustic guitar.

I want to ask about this setup:

A M/S couple 100 cm from guitar and a "spot mic" 50 cm from guitar
(in the middle between guitar ans M/S couple).

I record in a corner (facing the corner and M/S 80 cm from corner).

What about phase problems ?

Using Omni As Centre Mic in MS Array

First, let me apologise for hogging posts by posting two in a row but I am on holidays.

I have been doing mid side recording now for some time in a variety of contexts (foley, recording ensembles, choir) and using a variety of mic set ups. Usually I am using Sennheiser. MHH40/30 with rather loose middle provided by the MKH40. I like this technique.

Sennheiser MS and Schoeps MS Pairs Compared

I own an MS pair of Sennheisers MKH40 Mid and MKH30 which I use occasionally for recording small choirs and ensembles and also recording foley.

I have a chance to pick up a Schoeps MS (cardiod centre) pair as well and was wondering whether anyone who has been lucky enough to use and compare both could comment on whether the sound is noticeably different?
