Portable recorder for recording ambience/effects/wind noise? Some foley advice?

I need a portable recording device for some light foley work where I would need to be outdoors or mobile. Sounds include banging and slamming sounds that would be dangerous to record indoors, ambient sounds like nature, rain, or speech in a social setting, and the sound of wind rushing.

Recording devices and media from 1877 to the present day

hi.

I am a college student in the uk, writing a dissertation about the changes and developments in recording media and devices through out history, from the invention of the phonograph to the present day. I have written a small survey on this, and it would be greatly appreciated if anyone would take the time to complete it.
The link is below.
Thanks
Chris.

Portable recording device with playback while recording new track (w/without overdub)

Hi everyone, I am new here. I am looking for something like the Zoom H4n / H2 that I can use as a portable recorder, but also plug into a PC and use as a USB mic. I would also like to be able to play back a track on the device and record a new track without overdubbing.

1-2 Track Recording Device (Vista Compatible)

Several years ago, I purchased an Aardvark Q10 for all my recording needs. I used this in conjunction with Cool Edit Pro / Adobe Audition until recently, and I have been very happy with the results. A few weeks ago, however, I bought a new computer, which came with Windows Vista, and my Aardvark will not function/install properly.
