recording mostly all direct
I'm really curious to find out how many members here record everything direct except for basically guitar and vocals? ( welcome to the new world of quality preamps though)

Why doesn't it sound like what I hear?
Hi,
I know that this is the question that just about every home recording person asks. I'm actually asking because what I hear sounds VERY different in spite of my equipment.

Who Are The New Mentors
I noticed that the Music Industry forum has bit the dust, or is on sabbatical, so I'll post my question here as it is more of a general interest topic.
I recently saw "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" on DVD and I must say: Holy cow, was I ever living in ignorant bliss! These musicians are incredible and are now my role models as far as playing and performing goes.

B3 vs. . . M3 Hammond Organ
What's the deal with Hammond Organs in general and the B3 in particular. Why are they revered as they are? What's the difference between the B3 and the M3. If you had an opportunity to pick up either at a good price, would you? Why?
I ask because I've been hearing a lot about these lately and I'm just wondering what's up with'em.
Thanks

What constitutes a well played solo?
This is partially in response to Rick’s question in mastering about song order.
I’ve heard about a zillion solos on different instruments in my lifetime. Just finished listening to some Louis Armstrong cuts.
Question for topic? What makes a good solo as opposed to a bad solo or just a mediocre solo?

Visual appearance. how important is it it?
Also posted on a different BBS, but you get that :D
OK, this may seem a bit harsh but in todays industry climate, marketing (selling) an image seems more important than selling the music.

Most Influential Artists
Well, along the lines of a couple of other posts here (like Don's "top 3 recordings"), I'd be interested in starting a post on the "Most Influential Artists" of our era.

Digital vs. . . Analog Mixer
OK folks...this one is bound to spark some debate...
I am about to make a change to my studio setup as follows:
I am using Cubase SX, have a Tascam US-428 as a control surface, and an old POS analog mixer that I use for monitoring only (nothing that gets recorded goes through the Tascam or the mixer).
My plan has been to add 2 pieces of gear:
