Got into an argument with my roommate about amp emulation. My first guitar amp was a Line 6 Flextone II. Which to this day i still have and I love it. My roommate said my amp was crap and hes never heard a good sound from it. On the flip side i know an experienced musician who owns a Variax and owns one of the modeled guitars on the variax.

I thought it would nifty to paint my cymbals to match my drumset...

how do you think this would affect the sound and performance of the cymbals?

Ok, here is the thing. I'm realizing that I'm not listening to enough "good music". I just got an iPod so i can use my dead moments for listening to well done mixes. Here is the question for everybody:

What is your favourite song/album/engineer? Please consider these characteristics:

Just curious on some schools of thought for what would be the absolute best mics for recording various parts of an arrangement. Vocals, (best kinds for different types of songers) Kick Drum, Snare, Acoustic Guitar etc.

Just looking for opinions.

They seem to be held in such high regard as kick-ass, but are they really that cool? I have a couple pre's that I think are pretty good:GR MP2NV, X73i, UA 2-610. Would a Neve 1073 just blow them out of the water, or could I hear it and go, "Eh, a little cooler" but not go berserk or anything?

I'm extremely curious about these, but I've heard very little about them. Even searching on the Internet there isn't an awful lot of information -but typing Vac Rac into Google will get you lots of information about the Vac Rac affordable rod and reel transportation system, whatever that is.

In the Santana song Smooth, Rob Thomas sings the lead vocal. It has a little sound to me of a through a megaphone quality and some other aspects to it I cant describe well (maybe a 2nd vocal slightly delalyed?). If you have heard that song, what are you
thoughts on how to replicate the characteristics of the vocal?
