Need help choosing a laptop and software for live gig

I'm a novice computer user looking for a laptop and software for live gig.Probably gonna track rythym parts on a Yamaha digital recorder, mix down to 2 trk, want to be able to catagorize and playback live. Also want to store and recall lyrics for live use.Considering a Sony vaio,256,40gig,pentium 4 2.0.worried about crashing live.heard XP pro more stable than XP.Then i have other friends telling m

Upgrade software and drivers?

Well I'm confused... as soon as I have built my DAW, the questione comes: What should I upgrade?
This is my list:
Mobo Asus P4B533-V (upgrade BIOS?)
soundcard RME Hammerfall LE 9636 (upgrade drivers?)
Win XP-pro.. is there anything to upgrade?...( the DAW is not connected to internet )
And finally Cubase SX v.1.03 (upgrade or not?)

Hardwer or software sampler?

What sounds better:"The same sample of,lets say,
bass guitar played from EmuE4Platinum or played from Halion or GigaStudio on computer with Motu2408?
I know that there is differences between Emus and Akais samplers in alogorithm, but I wonder are the software samplers enough good in producing sound as they are hardware samplers.
Thanks in advance.
