Recording Via Macbook Pro's Optical SPDIF

Is anybody out there recording straight into their Macbook Pro's optical SPDIF?

Is it possible to hook up a system that goes: preamp ---> A/D/A ---> Macbook Pro optical SPDIF?

If so, what are the drawbacks to this? Are there any quality issues? Would I be better off with a two-channel firewire system?

Using external converters w/S/PDIF or aes/ebu to soundcard

Hi all!

I'm sorta a noobie to digital recording, and I need some advice on some new equipment. I'm going to expand my analog studio to digital. Now I'm wondering what I need to look for when purchasing some sort of soundcard. I'd like to use Pro Tools (does it matter if it's LE or M-powered?), but I have Logic Pro for now.

Signal passthrough SPDIF

With Firewire 410, does the SPDIF limit the signal being passed through?

For example, can I send and recieve 192khz at 24bit signal through Firewire 410 as a passthrough from a source to my pc, without Firewire not touching it?

I was thinking of a solution like Rosetta 200, and maybe with it, I can just go through the Firewire 410 without it doing anything ot the signal.
