Tracking question? Keyboards Synths? (please help)

I am baffled why I here many enginers Track keyboards through a DI the to a board or channel strip... Is this to raise the level? Do they use phantom power engaged? Does this make tracking clearer?
Would this be a good idea for use with my Triton, Mpc2000xl, Roland5080? Going through either a Ua 610 or a Apogeetrak2..

Converters for Synths

Hi all,

I'm a musician who is growing into the recording stuff, so I would like to ask for your advice on ADC .

Currently I use a Yamaha 02R, but I'm running out of channels and the ADDA extension card gives me level problems all the time : no synth seems to get more than -12 dB out of this card, so I'm pretty much limited to the 24 input channels with gain.

Pentium-M vs Pentium 4 laptop: anyone playing softsynths?

I'm about to pop for a new laptop and USB interface, and want to be able to play Reason synths live with MIDI. A 2.8GHz Pentium 4 is plenty fast but runs hot and has a short battery life (1.5 hrs or so). A 1.7 GHz Pentium M is about as fast for business apps, runs cooler and claims 3-5hr battery.

Software Wavetable Synths?

So, yeah I'm a newbie, thing is I like "composing" music on Guitar Pro. I was using the SB Live soundcard but recently I bought and installed the M-Audio Audiophile (PCI). Well the problem is that the Audiophile has no Midi Synth. I want to get rid of the SB Live (I currently have both cards installed) but I need a midi synth for Guitar Pro.

Pulsating Synth Sounds

How come that many synths produce a pulsating sound when you strike a chord and other don't. It's hard to describe but on many hardware and software synths if you strike a triad chord (or any other) you get a pulsating, wobbling sound. There are also many synths which don't have this. I know it has something to do with synced osc's or the lack thereof. Any idea's?
