a question for the professionals, if i may...

okay, so you've finished your arrangement, a combination of midi and audio parts and you're about to start the actual mixing process. first you have to mixdown your midi to an audio track. i'm talking here about computer-based recording but i suppose the question would be the same for tape-based recording too.

I'd like to know the BASIC recording, editing and mastering techniques. Nothing fancy.
I want to record acoustic guitar and vocals, just in my room.

My questions:

- Can I record with a mic directly in my soundcard or do I need a mixer or something like that?

I'm very much a beginner, and recording music is just a hobby. i'm a businessman, but when i have some extra time i love to research audio engineering and practice in a small home studio i set up.

i'm looking forward to record the first full lenght album for my band.We already have a demo, recorded track by track, but now, we want it to be recorded with all the members playing at the same time, as we now have music with open lenght sections, and also want the recording to sond more lively, as we were deceived by the demo, which sound dull.

This is my first post, so go easy on me.

First off, I realize now after reading the 1st five pages of the mastering forum that I am nowhere (and won't soon be) near a proper mastering setup and for that matter I am questioning the foundation with which I have built this studio up to be (another thread), but all this is not the point.

How do they do it?

Avril Lavigne - I'm With You: The only way I can describe what really catches my ear with this song is 'close miking'.. I mean the guitars and drums just sound like the mic was placed inside the instrument. I know I know, it's probably just a very high quality mic, or a combination of them- but I have no idea how to achieve a sound like this.. Very cool!

I recently learned about the 'sweep' technique using a parametric EQ where I set the Q bandwidth as small as it gets (20), the gain up +6dB, and sweep the frequency until I hear 'singers' (frequencies that seem to ring no matter what the instruments are doing) and pull them down -2.4dB.

1. tab to transient (for audio editing)

2. nugding regions with plus/minus keys

2.5. placing regions in line with the cursor location, or selected region start location (control + drag on PT) (or control+option+drag to duplicate)

3. can the grid values be changed?

4. quick keys for the tools?

I use for the O.Hs (the last year) a Neumann Stereo Mic (SM 69 fet) and ofcourse X/Y.
What you think about that?
By the way I didn' t notice a diskution for X/Y mic technique. Nobody loves it?
In some Studios I saw 3 Mics for the O.Hs L/R and one in the middle.

Hey guys and gals. I just wanted some opinions on close mic techniques for drums. Most people I talk to that run little project studios generally mic their drums with a snare mic, kick mic, couple over heads, maybe some tom mics, maybe a room mic, etc.
