bottom line on mics and mic preamps...

what's better or more beneficial. or if you wanna answer negatively. what's worse...

1. a great mic with just an ok mic preamp/channel strip?
2. a great mic preamp/channel strip with just an ok mic?

i'm sure some will say that it's relative and depends on which pieces of equipment you're working with, but i'm just looking for a general/"in most cases" answer.

Best Mic for Toms?

Hi friends of Recording.org

Ok, I know that this theme is old, but while I read yours comments in the Forum more dudes I have about the best mics for Toms.

Kurt prefers AT Pro35

Others: ATM 25, Sennheiser e604, MD421, Audix D2, SM57, Sennheiser MD 409, Electro-Voice 468

Is AT Pro 35 better that ATM 25 or viceverse?

Tom Mics Overheads Best?

Hey guys just wondering what tom mics are getting good results. I've been using cheap little CAD mics for racks and a CAD LD kick drum mic for the floor. I found that my CADs sounded a little nicer than my SM57's. I'm still not super happy though. Was thing of using my TLM 103 on the floor and getting some MD 421's for racks. Any other suggestions?

tom mics

Hey all,

just wondering if anyone has some suggestions for tom mics apart from md421, luv 'em but cant afford them right now!
Of course, i dont expect a mic half the price to perform as well!

Thanks heaps,

Sammyg
P.S. has anyone tried the e604?

Tom mics

We are getting ready (in the next 2 weeks) to record our new band. Our drummer has a large drum kit . We'll be recording to a foxtex 24 track recorder on location (drums, bass, rhythm guitar, scratch vocals) then coming back and dumping the tracks to Digital performer to do guitar and vocal overdubs.

Inexpensive LD condensers as tom mics...

I have a project coming up where we've decided we're going to focus getting more of a 70's drum sound - direct micing, very little room sound. The tom mics I currently have don't really fit the bill, so I'm wondering if I should invest in some of the cheaper LD condensers - Marshall/MXL, perhaps. I've heard of some people doing this, but I'm not really sure which models.
