You might try asking the drummer to back off on the hat a little. Often times drummers bash their cymbals too much when recording. I find that they often don't hit the drums hard enough, and they hit the cymbals way too hard.

I hate when a drummer is inconsistant with his hits. Then it makes compression a pain in the buttox.
