Ok, here's the deal. I have been recording quite successfully on a Yamaha AW1600 SIAB system, mainly punk rock songs, for drums i have been using Alesis SR16 and complimenting that with Alesis Performance Pad.

BUT. .i am looking for better sounds than the Alesis can offer and i am thinking of maybe using a simple drum loop programme on my laptop and then importing it and using the SIAB from that point. Now, as i have avoided using computer based recording like the plague just as a personal preference i know sweet f.a about it only as far as hearing Pro Tools this, Cubase that and the term ' plugins' banded around a lot.

So, my question is, if all i want to do is create a complete drum pattern then import it to my studio where is a good place to start and what exactly do i need, i have a pretty good laptop, but as far as anything else i need help! And as already mentioned, all i need is to be able to plan and produce a drum pattern that i can tweak.

As ever, all help and info greatly appreciated.

If you want to work with loops whether midi or audio based, you need a sequencer of some sort. [="http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/acidfamily.asp"]Acid[/]="http://www.sonycrea…"]Acid[/], [ProTools[/]="http://www.digidesi…;"]ProTools[/] (requires Digidesign hardware or M-audio hardware for M-Powered), [="http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/audiopostproduction_product/nuendo4.html"]Nuendo[/]="http://www.steinber…"]Nuendo[/], [Cubase[/]="http://www.steinber…"]Cubase[/], [="http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/"]Audition[/]="http://www.adobe.co…"]Audition[/], or you could pick one of the many cheap or free software like [Audacity[/]="http://audacity.sou…"]Audacity[/], [="http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/"]Kristal[/]="http://www.kreative…"]Kristal[/], [Mixcraft[/]="http://www.acoustic…"]Mixcraft[/], [="http://ntrack.com/"] N-Track Studio[/]="http://ntrack.com/"] N-Track Studio[/] or [Reaper[/]="http://www.reaper.f…"]Reaper[/].

Then you need a loop sample library like [="http://www.betamonkeymusic.com/"]Beta Monkey Music[/]="http://www.betamonk…"]Beta Monkey Music[/] or ="http://www.toontrac…"]Superior Drummer[/]="http://www.toontrac…"]Superior Drummer[/].

There' a third of your homework. After that it's up to you to read the manuals and go through the tutorials. Of course, if you decide to go this route, you may decide to put your Yamaha to the side and use the software once you realize how much less of a hassle it is to edit and use.
