I don't use Nuendo, but I have been (barely) looking into this aspect. Near as I can tell, DVD players have a hardware decoder that takes an ENCODED 2-channel (AC-3) audio signal and decodes it back into 5.1 , although if I'm reading it right, the DVD standard for audio WITH picture is not all that great - I'm not sure, but I think you need a "DVD Authoring" program, which should let you choose what kind of DVD you burn and set it up and burn it. If I'm reading your post right, Nuendo must either have an AC-3 encoder built-in (cool, saved you about $5-700 if it does) or do you mean you have six separate tracks on your drive and need to encode them and burn them to DVD ?

Oh, yeah - I forgot to mention - If you don't already have a DVD burner, I saw a mag article the other day where they compared compatibility of DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R - DVD- formats played back on all but one of the 5 or 6 "set-top" DVD players they checked, whereas the "plus" formats were only about 60% compatible. What this means to ME is that the new DAW I'm getting ready to build will definitely have a Pioneer A03 unit included. This is a link to a revue of the Pioneer as sold by LaCie, the second page talks (only a little) about software. I couldn't tell by their comments whether it would let you burn SACD's, or 5.1 Audio Only -

If I encounter any more useful info, I'll be glad to post here again - meanwhile, be sure to watch those icy parking lots - BTW, what I meant about the 996 tape problem, is that it is theoretically possible (from my own experience at Memorex's tape manufacturing plant years ago) for someone to incorrectly thread a winding machine at the factory, in which case the black side would come in contact with the head, and you would end up trying to record THROUGH the backing onto the oxide layer. That should give you nothing BUT noise, which prompted my reply. Your last post on the Tascam Analog forum told me that hasn't happened, and apparently the trash is the best place for those two reels. In fact I am not ´´the´´ Caveman you met at the Tascam forum! But very interesting info anyway because I have owned a bunch of analog stuff and 996 I´m very familiar with. I still have a pile of 2´´ tapes as a relic. Man,the 2´´ machine prices have got SO low around here it´s ridiculous! Good moment to get an Otari again?

Thanks for your reply, I didn´t buy a DVD burner yet,maybe I can get some compatibility with a CDR? At least my MPG-1 (was it that?) home-movie disks play back on my DVD player. Looks like it will be the Pioneer burner whenever I get it. Must figure this out first. Some demo DVD:s for movie stuff, most of the people to get it use the same Top-of-the -line Pioneer player that I´ve got.

There is a decoderencoder in Nuendo but I also have another program that converts stuff. I wonder how the Nuendo thing actually works? In master inserts they seem to work but I had no luck with the actual exported file. Manual time?

So I just export audio from Nuendo as waw,it is a six file pack with all the channels separated. Then I convert it to AC3. I am trying to find a program that burns the AC3 to CDR, tried demos, not even Nero did that. I was told it would, at the Nuendo forum.

The funny thing is that my Soundblaster Live plays that AC3 file back perfectly. And I´ts just another relic here, the SB ! It does not even monitor 5.1 from Nuendo properly so I use another card.

You guys do know that nuendo will be adding an AC3 file encoder program on the next release right?! Saw it at Namm!! Looks and sounds cool!!
I spoke with Rob Hill the other day(had to do a tech/engineering gig with him) and tried to get some answers about the next release but he gave me the rolled eyes and whistle of the pleading the fifth look!! Damn!! So close!! lol
