This is my first post here. I have searched extensivaly and have not found any posts that answer my question. I currently have a M-Audio Delta 1010lt and record onto Sonar 4 on my PC. I just recently purchased a laptop and I am now looking into a firewire based unit. I do mostly live sound so i would be using it for the most part for SIA Smaart live and board tapes. However, I would also like to be able to record 8 tracks in the field as well. My first question is this, is their a major difference between the MOTU 828 and the 828mkll?
Second question is this, I also have a small recording studio and I would like to be able to record more than 8 tracks at once. Is it possible to use my 1010lt and an 828 at the same time?

The original 828 also only goes up to 24-bit/48kHz, has no MIDI. It's also kinda wacky because channel pairs 3+4, 5+6 and 7+8 each have ONE knob to control the input gain. I doubt the converters sound much better but I realy wouldn't be able to say.
If you can't get a straight answer on the use of both 828 and your delta, you might have more luck with another Maudio product that is proven to work along side of the 1010lt. Some might say get Motu because the converters are better, but really it's in the same ballpark.

I have never used the original 828, but as I understand it there has been quite a few changes. I would believe there are more modern AD converters which I expect sounds better, the 828mkII does sound good. Secondly the inbuilt mixer in the 828mkII allows you to mix any of the 20 inputs in 4 stereo groups and send them out. A few odd changes here and there as well, all in all the 828mkII is a really good card if you ask me. You need to add in the external mic pres though, and if you have to buy new, just maybe the 896HD might be an alternative.
As for running two soundcards, well, you might be able to but I would not bet on it. Few applications does support it and as a minimum you would have to synch the word clocks together in order to not get clicks or pops. The 828mkII has 10 analog inputs (2 with mic pres and 8 line inputs). For further inputs you may use an ADAT converter. When it comes to channels per dollar the Behringer ADA8000 is hard to beat. That box gives you 8 more channels. (I have one, works for me, but I rarely go above 8 channels).
