You are almost there. Here it goes: RCA out from your soundcart to tape in on your mixer, buy couple of adaptors 1/4" TS mono toRCA and go from your main out on the mixer to RCA in on the soundcard(you can also use tape out to line in as you have been doing) i find it easyer to go from the main output. If you want to record your guitar through the mixer you'll need to spend some more on the Direct Injection box (DI Box) you can pick up some cheap ones on the net or a better option would be an Amp modeler of some sort (Line6 POD or V-amp from Behringer, Korg have some good cheap units as well) If you are using a DI youll need a ballanced XLR cable which will go from the DI to one of your XLR(mic) imputs, Amp modelers on the other hand have line outputs and would be hooked up to line imputs on your mixer. Re. your monitoring question you should hook up your Amp/speakers to the control room output on your mixer. There!

I am also kinda new to this whole home recording scene. I've been reading to figure out what my best setup would be. Here's what I think, please give your thoughts/corrections. Thanks in advance.

Basically I want to:
1. Record guitars (1 sometimes 2 at a time)
2. Record vocals
Most of my guitar is hard heavy rock

What I have/willing to purchase:
1. I have a DELL..who doesn't. Pretty new, enough mem/cpu to do this stuff. POS soundcard. Looking to purchase entire new computer dedicated to recording. What type of soundcard ?
2. Couple of guitars
3. MXL 990/993 Studio Package - 2 condenser mics
digitech rp3 efx
tons of cords
4. Tascam 4track - tape recorder (dont know how this fits in yet, its my friends)
5. Protools/Sonic Foundry software
6. 2 Amps ( neither w/ outputs ***I learned my lesson after 2) One is a digital cabinet emulator (Line6 Spider2 4x12)

What I need help with:
1. How do i set this crap up? In what sequence?
2. What do I need to purchase?

I think I need to buy some DI's(direct somethingmajigers) and possibly a mixer (need advice on this one..I/O slots, whats good? relatively inexpensive (not cheap). I would like to have direct sound from the guitar(s) and mic'ed sound from the amps. I think this would give me a nice mix of clean and distorted tone.

So, I plug the guitars into the DI's (do these things have 2 outputs?) 1 output to the amps (which are mic'ed->mixer), and 2nd output directly to the mixer. Is this now 4 tracks if I have 2 guitars recording at the same time? Can someone elaborate on the gear setup process..what plugs into what. Thanks.

Well, you'll have to get yourself a new soundcard, something with at least four imputs and for what you wont to do i'd say have a look at something like Tascam FW-1804 wich has four microphone imputs and four line imputs and hooks up to your computer via Firewire. Normaly DI boxes can split signals so you would hook your stuf this way: plug your guitar into the DI box, XLR out of your DI to one of the mic imputs on the FW-1804, split signal from your DI box into your Amp. One of your mics would hook up directly into your FW-1804. Just repeat this with your other guitar and amp and you cover four of your signals. If you need to record any keyboards in the future you would yust hook them up to line imputs on the FW-1804. You also get Cubase LE with the Tascam so that would cover your recording software even thou you already have some. You can then add vocals and anything else you need as an overdub. FW-1804 also has digital imputs on SPDIF and ADAT wich you could use to expand your system in the future using something like Behringer ada8000. Hope this helps!
