I wondering about what kind of preamp could enhance the performance of a Shure KSM 27 for vocal recording? Possibly can be used to do some brass also. Right now Im using a Tascams Fw1884 phantom power...
Anny suggestions?

Have you solved that buzzing problem you were having with the KSM27?
I hope so...What kind of results are you looking for- clear and clean, or "warm'n'fuzzy"? What kind of budget?
The Grace 101 is a great CLEAN preamp for that mic. The Groove Tubes "The Brick" is a great "tube-colored" mic pre. Both also act as a very good DI box for a guitar, bass, or synth. Price(US dollars) for the 101 is about $600, the Brick can be had for around $500. Maybe less if you shop around on the internet.
Both are excellent products, very versatile, and reliable. No cheap Chinese parts, ala ART. I own both (and a lot more), and they have served me well. You might also look at the SafeSound P1, which is roughly the same cost as the 101. It has a GREAT dynamics section (compressor/peak limiter/downward expander) built in to it, and the preamp uses the very well-respected Burr-Brown chip. Check them out...

thanks a lot moonbaby, you have been very kind. I had to send the mic back to seller , it was behaving pretty strangely after trying all parameter that wher considered.
Thanks a lot for your advise. One question, I have Tascam board(1884), if i have an external preamp, how can i do to use only one preamp, and not run two at the same time..... Because the Tascam has already mic preamps integrated...

I don't fully understand your question. Do you want to use a "better"preamp than the Tascam, but run it through the Tascam? If that is the case, you would take the line level output of the external preamp and run it into the line input of 1 of the channels on the Tascam. I am making an assumption here, though. That is that you HAVE seperate line ins on the Tascam...

Yes , thats exactly what I meant, so if I use and external preamp, and I want to run it through the tascam, I have to use the line in (yes the tascam haves), so what am assuming is that the onboard preamp only works for the xlr input on the board, and it does not work for the line ins..
(am repeating what you just wrote, sorry english is a little bit difficult for me)
ok, moonbaby, thanks a lot....

OK, so we now know a bit more. I have found something like a dbx channel strip (the 286a Mic Processor or the 376 Tube channel strip) make decent external mic preamps on a budget. Both provide a compressor, de-esser, and some EQ, so they come in handy. Remember that the processing is in the analog domain, so the compression, etc. that may be available from the digital Tascam, will not have the latency or sonic artifacts that the Tascam will be prone to.
I still like my Groove Tube Bricks (2), but they produce so much gain, you end up having to "play engineer" to deal with that. I don't get the impression that's what you want. Like I said in the first post, the Grace 101 is a very clean, good preamp. But based on your situation, I think that you would be better off with a combination mic pre/dynamics processor.
