Hey all, this is an instrumental progressive metal track I've just spent the week recording. I'm mixing on rather crappy headphones due to space limitations / not wanting to annoy the neighbours, etc., so I'm not sure how well I can trust my ears.. Would appreciate any feedback!

Thanks,

Ben.

After EQ-matching on some reference mixes, I've cut some of the track's lower frequences up to about 200Hz and made a high cut >15khz. I have attached the result -- any better than the first mix?

Thanks in advance if you manage to have a listen!

I think that in the second mix you've taken out too much low end. The first mix was a bit boomy but in the second you've lost some "thickness".

Your playing is great. Nice and tight but if it was my track, I'd definitely add some kind of "live" room reverb to the kit. It might take some of the "programmed" feel away.

On your slower solo guitar parts, I'd add a nice stereo delay to make the gtr "sing and soar". I'd also add some room reverb to the guitar overall as well.

These are just my opinions though. Nice job!

Cheers.

Thanks Peter for the production tips. I've added some delay here and there as suggested, in particular on the 'chorus' parts and some sublte reverb to the guitars and drums and attempted to address some of the issues around low end and overall mix clarity. Not sure if I was successful? Have attached another mix. Thanks again for the feedback!

Thanks kmetal for the additional feedback. I've taken on board the feedback and have one final mix here that I did post-acquiring some new DT990 pros. Hopefully I'm closer to nailing it now.

Cheers,

Ben
