Well I'm getting ready for a shopping trip for powered monitors in the $1400-$1800 range, and one of the usual suspects is the JBL LSR4328. While I'm inclined to be well disposed toward JBL I'm a little leary of the whole concept of the "room correction" electronics. My room may not be perfect, but I've put in a lot of bass trapping and calmed the most obvious resonant modes. Would you use the JBL eq if you had it? Is it a plus or a minus as far as the speakers go?

Also, I've gotten a lot of opinions on speakers in this range from past posts, but if you want to chime in with opinions on Mackies, Genelecs, Dynaudios, etc. in this price range please do so.

The 6328s sound better.

None of that room calibration crap is going to overcome a bad room.

Also, don't forget the Adam A7s.

I have had Genelecs, Mackies, Tannoys. You want to know what? I could be made to use any of them. You will have to work with a dealer that has access to them all, to try them out.

If I go up to the 6328s I have start selling kids off for medical experiments - in which case I'd probably move up to the $3k price range.

The room is actually pretty good (worst problem is lack of symmetry). I'm really trying to figure if the electronics detract from the speaker or put it in a price category where it can't compete.

I had not considered the A7s - price is nice.

As you say, I'd like to find a place to listen to all of them and make a choice. Problem is that I'm "centrally located." DC is a four hour drive. Chuck Levins has Mackie, Event, and Tannoy. Of course, anything in this group is going to be better than what I have (M-Audio BX8), so even choosing between those three would be a big step up.

I don't like the idea of electronically fixing the room. The Eq may inroduce more phase trouble than its worth. Depends on how they do it, but it sound pretty much like a gimic to me.

I really like my Dynaudios. I have mixed on Mackie, Adam, Genelecs, tannoys, NS-10s and KRK. I think my favorites in order:

1)Dynaudio BM15A
2) Genelec 1031A
3) KRK RP-8
4) Mackie HR824
5) Tannoy Reveal 8D
6) Yamaha Ns-10s
7) Adam S2.5A

Yep I found the adams a little too detailed to be honest. I kept turning down the upper mids.

The 6328s cn be had for $850 a piece at GC. They are the biggest JBL reseller in the world.

I mix surround with 6328s for LCR, 6325s for LS RS, and 6312SP for LFE

Bass management can be done through the sub via a SPDT switch wired to a 1/4" cable, the sub has the +10 LFE compensation.

That would definitely be in my price range, I assume you are talking about demos or refurbs. MF (owned by GC) has them for $1,150 each. If you can point me to someone who lists them for $850, I can probably get someone to match price.

BTW, do you use the room correction at all?

Not demos nor refurbs.
Walk into GC, and offer $850 a piece for them.
List= $1419
Street=$1149
GC Cost=$710

Street wise price= $850

If the wannabe musician at the counter wont budge, see the manager, and let him drop the price. Not the assistant manager, the real manager.

The room correction is for lowering LF bumps, I have a null, so more bass trapping and moving them further from the wall fixed it.

I have a friend using them for DVD mixes in a 35X50 mix stage, and they are flat across the board in free field.
