Hi Jerry !

I've done it a few time using the record fonctions of today's digital mixers just for fun,, But if I was to offer the service, I'd use a multitrack gear using the direct outs of the mixer. Of course when I do live work, it's mostly pop or rock artists at large venue. If I wanted to record acoustic instuments in a place with no PA.. I guess I'd go small with a stereo setup depending on the musicians.
I believe there is no good for all recipe, we must adapt to the venue each time.

I have two 16-channel split snakes (only use one at the moment), a Soundcraft GB2-R and an Alesis HD24. I haven't been recording a lot of shows lately but am looking to do more.

Here's an example. The band was a little off due to tech issues so there are some tempo "adjustments" made here and there. And pardon the F-bomb at the beginning. The house sound person didn't use any mics on the kit so I put my AT-822 up as an overhead. I captured the audience with a pair of F-15 SDC mics (from the Audix Fusion 6 drum mic pack) gaffed to the DSL and DSR corners of the stage and angled in 45°. There's no added reverb, what you hear is the room mics.

Yes - mainly classical.

I use a Nagra VI or AETA 4MinX recorder and I have a good selection of Microtech Gefell, Neumann, Sennheiser,etc. mics.

Monitoring is via ME-Geithain monitors (I have RL 906 and RL 944K) if I have a room, or Sennheiser HD 800 / HD 25-1 if I don't. Monitor controller is the Grace m903.

The last major one I did was in Chipping Campden last September - it was the inaugral concert for Sono Vivo, a charity that raises money for cancer research via classical music concerts.

I used an ORTF pair of Gefell M300, plut a 60cm spaced pair of Gefell M221 omnis at -12dB.
